TRUST MONEY MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Five groups across Sussex, Surrey and Kent have been awarded grants of
£2,000 by Gatwick Airport Community Trust this year.
The lucky five are St. Swithun’s Church Restoration Trust, East
Grinstead; Fordcombe Village Hall, Tunbridge Wells; St. Mary Magdalene
Church, Rusper; Limpsfield Chart Playground Association and Reigate and
Redhill YMCA.
Over 190 local community groups and organisations have benefited from
a total of some £139,000 in grants with 63 being granted £1,000
or more.
In its third year of operation, the Trust received 315 applications totalling
over £650,000. Grants approved will support a wide variety of projects
and different aspects of community life across parts of East and West
Sussex, Surrey and Kent.
These include improvements to community facilities such a village halls,
a range of sporting activities, support for amateur music and drama groups,
grants to scouts, guides and brownie groups, help for people with disabilities
and environmental and conservation schemes.
Christopher Lowe, chairman of Gatwick Airport Community Trust, said: “
The Trust has already supported over 450 different projects since its
launch in 2002 and, as last year, the demand for grants this year was
far greater than the funds available.
“Trustees follow up a number of projects to ensure the grants have
been applied correctly. This is a great opportunity to meet people in
the local community and to see how Trust money can make a real difference
to such a wide variety of deserving causes."
Notes for editors:
(i) Gatwick Airport Community Trust was launched in 2002. It has been
set up by agreement between West Sussex County Council, Crawley Borough
Council and BAA Gatwick. Setting up the Trust was one of the legally binding
obligations that formed part of the legal agreement signed by BAA Gatwick
and local authorities following publication of the airport’s Sustainable
Development Strategy.
(ii) BAA Gatwick will donate £100,000 to the Trust every year until
March 2009 and the donation is index-linked. The Trust also receives money
raised through fines on aircraft that infringe Gatwick’s departure
noise limits.
(iii) The Trust is also a member of Crawley Charity Partnership.
